This Manual of Style is a document aimed at governing how to make articles in this wiki.
Article Content and Creation[]
Articles are written in an in-universe tone. Casting information, miscellaneous trivia and other production tidbits are reserved for the infobox (for character articles) and Trivia section at the bottom of the article.
Present facts only. Things that are presented on-screen. Avoid commentary or supposition based on events that may or may not happen if they are not explicitly discussed by the characters.
Naming[]
Use the subject's proper name as much as possible. Redirects can always be created if the subject is known by a more popular alias. Do not create redirects for plurals of the subject as linking to them can be expressed in more efficient ways, see below.
Character Articles[]
Articles about characters use the template Character.
Traveler characters use the following sectioning layout:
== Averted Death == Nothing is known about the circumstances that turned him/her into a Traveler. (if not known. Otherwise, specify) == Biography == === <Traveler Number> Future History === Information about the Traveler in the future he/she left behind. Use Traveler (Number Unknown) in the section header if unspecified. Omit if not known. === <Host Name> === Information about the host prior to being overwritten by the Traveler. Use Host in the section header if unspecified. Omit if not known. === Traveler <Number> === Information about the Traveler in the 21st century, after downloading into the host. Use Traveler (Number Unknown) in the section header if unspecified. Omit section header if nothing is known about the other two.
Non-Traveler characters can dive straight into the Biography section, divided into further subsections of logical groupings if necessary.
Deceased characters are written in past tense. Alive characters, present tense. But since this is a time travel show, character status is determined by their last known appearance. Marcy Warton, who shot herself in Version One, is shown to be alive in Version Two, and is therefore considered alive. Character status in the infobox should also reflect these circumstances.
Personality sections are prone to redundancy and subjectivity. Instead, integrate what is known into the introductory paragraphs of the character. Let the rest of the page justify what's written there.
Concept Articles[]
These articles are about the devices or concepts comprising the series mythos.
The following section layout applies to devices:
== Properties == Capabilities or limitations of the device == Usage == Per-episode instances of their usage. For more ubiquitous tech like the comms, not necessary.
Location Articles[]
These are the prominent sets used in the series, such as Ops.
Organization Articles[]
These are articles about large groups of people.
== History == Write in past tense. == Known Employees == *Bulletpoint list of employees, linked to their pages if they exist
Traveler Team Articles[]
This concerns the groupings of Travelers in the series. None of them are ever given official names, so for the purposes of organizing them in this wiki they are usually named after their leader or after their most descriptive distinction.
== Missions == === Mission Title === None of the missions are also given explicit headings. Keep the mission titles short but descriptive. If they only have one mission, the header would be == Mission: (mission description) == Likewise, content here is a summary of events, not a detailed accounting. Past tense if all members are dead, present tense otherwise. == Known Members == *Bulletpoint list of members if the Traveler Team is not named after its team leader. The Core Traveler Team is the exception, being the main cast.
Episode Articles[]
This is one of the few article types exempt from the in-universe rule as production information is a major part of its content. However, the /Plot subpage must be written in in-universe terms as much as possible.
Cast Articles[]
Making pages about the cast and other production members is discouraged since they are better covered elsewhere, such as IMDB or Wikipedia. Compared to bigger franchises like Star Wars, Star Trek, etc., they do not have enough Travelers-specific material to be worth writing about, publications chronicling things they did on set, etc.
Just link to their IMDB or Wikipedia pages where applicable. Cast pages in this wiki will be redirected to their Wikipedia counterpart, or IMDB if there is none.
Coverage of the show's characters and concepts is ultimately more important and relevant. Revisit this section only if
- Most of the wiki is already presentable and complete
- It can be shown that cast pages are made with substantive, sourced, and unique information, not just brief one-liners, picture infoboxes, who's worked with whom, and other pitfalls of making articles about real people
- There is interest and follow through, not just interest and proponents who stop contributing not even halfway through.
Linking 101[]
Parsimony and efficiency in using wikilinks is encouraged. Please familiarize yourselves with the basics of linking here before creating unnecessary redirects or longer links when it can be done shorter. Visual editor is inefficient in this regard; use the source editor instead. Visual editor changes to links will be subject to further optimizations.
Do not relink to other pages every time the pertinent article is mentioned. A rule of thumb is only once per page excluding template calls and infoboxes.
- Linking to Wikipedia:
Travelers → Travelers
- Linking to IMDB:
<Actor Name> → Eric McCormack → Eric McCormack
Categories[]
Logical groupings of show-relevant aggregates only. Do not make categories with trivial distinctions like "males"/"females", "blue eyes", etc.
No categories on redirects.
Spoilers[]
Travelers is a show regularly dealing with deaths, whether by physical death or consciousness overwrite. Avoiding them is impossible in case of characters who become Travelers. Watch the show first and go to the wiki later to ensure a 100% spoiler-free experience.
That said, information must still be presented in a logical and orderly manner: top to bottom, not all over the place. That means revealing major status quo changes last, in case of introductory paragraphs.
Trivia[]
For all intents and purposes, Trivia sections function as a repository of behind the scenes information as the rest of the article has an in-universe tone. Bulletpoint each item.
Trivia sections are not places to add commentaries or speculation about the subject. If it's a personality trait or something else in-universe, it belongs to the main body of the article.
Stargate Connections[]
Brad Wright, creator of Travelers, was also an executive producer on the Stargate franchise and thus had many colleagues in front of or behind the camera who also worked on Travelers. Acknowledging these connections is allowed in character articles with a specific Trivia statement:
*Numerous actors in Travelers also had roles in the Stargate franchise, both of which had Brad Wright as an executive producer. <actor> portrayed <Stargate character name> in <specific Stargate spinoff title>.
Sourcing[]
Travelers is a show that ran for only three seasons, with no other media tie-ins or expanded universe material. Almost all information about it therefore is referenced from the individual episodes.
Sourcing statements from episodes is done with the template Ep.
*Grant MacLaren was overwritten with Traveler 3468 in the 12th floor of an abandoned building. (S1E01: Travelers) *Mr. Giant and henchmen like him kidnapping Travelers worldwide were eventually revealed to answer to the billionaire Vincent Ingram, also known as Traveler 001. (S1E05: Room 101, S2E01: Ave Machina)
If there are external references, use the format and put the following section at the bottom of the article. See https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Cite on further usage details.
== References == <references>
Sources must be independently verifiable and existent during verification. Private messages are dubious; user presenting such proof must prominently shoulder responsibility in case of refutation ("evidence of x as presented by User:xxxxx" as disclaimer caption or something similar).
If source website no longer exists a backup at the Internet Archive (https://web.archive.org) can be used.
Pictures[]
Most images from the show will have come from screencaps of the episodes themselves. High resolution PNG or lossless webp format is preferred. Jpegs are discouraged but allowed if sourced from official stills.
Do not use thumbnails. Images must complement what is written in the text near them. Unserious captions are allowed but do not make too obscure references that will fly over the heads of average readers.
