While the most obvious change effected by the Travelers was the deflection of the asteroid Helios, this could not have been the change that created the Faction. Room 101 takes place before Helios. Therefore, the pivotal change occurred within the first four episodes of the show.

“Decisions should be made by people, not a machine.” – Grace Day’s summary of the Faction’s belief system

The Faction is an unnamed insurgency movement in the future. Their goal is to topple the Director and return decision-making power to humanity by any means necessary. The Faction was responsible for kidnapping and torturing Carly Shannon, Trevor Holden, Philip Pearson, and Marcy Warton during the events of Room 101.

Origin

Grant MacLaren and his team come from a version of the future where the Faction does not exist, and thus they are unfamiliar with the threat they pose. Ellis and Grace reveal in the season finale that the Faction originated in Shelter 41 – a bunker that collapsed due to design flaws in one version of the future, but survived in the other. The implication is that the future was changed in some way that ensured the survival of the bunker.

Activities

The Faction has gained some level of control over the remnants of humanity in the future. According to Grace Day, the Director itself was vulnerable to corruption by the Faction before it was reset. The Faction therefore may have gained the ability to send consciousnesses and messages back in time, or even impersonate the Director. Grace and Ellis describe the Faction as brutal and ruthless, willing to kill anyone who gets in their way. They hired Mr. Giant to abduct MacLaren’s team in the 21st century in order to prevent them from carrying out a mission with which they disagreed. The four abductees were repeatedly tortured both physically and mentally while being pressed for answers to various questions, including:

  • When are you from?
  • What is your mission?
  • What is the Grand Plan?
  • How does the world end?

The Faction also attacked the travelers’ hideout by opening fire on the building while Phillip, Marcy, and Trevor were inside. The characters initially believed the Faction was attacking Ellis’s barn, but these attackers are revealed in the final moments to be federal agents led by Forbes.

The full extent of the Faction’s activities and power remains unknown. It is left ambiguous whether the Faction or the Director wanted Ellis to build the quantum frame, and left equally ambiguous which side wanted the frame destroyed. Mr. Giant and Charlotte are the only members or employees of the Faction ever depicted onscreen (both of whom are dead, and neither of whom were high-ranking).

Evidently, the Faction became dangerous enough that the Director had to develop a contingency plan to escape them in the event that its safety was compromised.

Mission

The Faction intends to topple the Director and break its despotic control over human society and time travel. They believe humanity, and not a machine, should make the decisions affecting its own survival. It remains unknown what sort of government would replace the cyberocratic dictatorship should the Faction succeed, nor is it specified how (or if) the Faction would replace the Grand Plan.
