"I know all about addiction, trust me. Mine's just legal."
— Ray[src]

Ray Green is a public defender who serves as Philip Pearson's lawyer. Ray is a procurer of sorts, getting Philip what he needs and making a little side cash from Philip’s ability to help him with prescient gambling advice. He has a gambling addiction, and no stranger to using underhanded tactics to get what he wants.

Biography[]

Ray first meets Philip in the aftermath of Detective Gower's questioning about the lethal overdose of Philip's roommate Stephen. He is made out to be an overworked lawyer who recognizes fellow addicts, though he originally says that it's with cigarettes. Ray initially wants Philip to accept a deal that includes prison time, but Philip makes a counteroffer: profit sharing from horse race bets.

Ray reluctantly accepts the cash advance and bets on three races with 20 to 1 odds or better, noting the bets were "so stupid" he had to go to three different bookies. When they all turn out correct, he makes good on giving Philip his share of the winnings, plus some "extra" in the form of heroin illegally procured from police lockup. He wonders how Philip predicts the wins, and the young man tells him he's "from the future." Ray assumes he isn't serious, but still wants to offer his legal (and otherwise) services in return for his gambling abilities.

The next day, Ray pays off some skateboarders to distract Gower from surveilling Philip. In return he wants another bet, but Philip declines, so he drops him off within Gower's sight so he can "think about it". (S1E01: Travelers)

The stunt doesn't impact their working relationship, as Ray receives a tip from Philip a few days later: all in on Calculated Chaos, 30% goes to his pocket, and the rest split 50/50 to Stephen and Gower's families, as the detective also died in the meanwhile. He advises Philip that giving the relatives money makes him look more guilty in their eyes, so Philip instructs him to do it anonymously. Ray shares that he has a son who hates him, but still accepted the new(ish) car he bought for his 18th birthday. Later, as he drops off the money at Stephen's parents' house, he observes Marion take the anonymous envelope he inserted at her door. (S1E03: Aleksander)

Ray continues to supply heroin-weaning drugs to Philip, but warns him trading one addiction for another never works. As he dropped off the item at Philip's garage, Ray sees Philip's scribbles on a wall, thinking it's his gambling matrix (but actually T.E.L.L.s and other historical information). Ray attempts to take a picture, but when Philip forbids him, he honors his wishes. He asks for another tip, reiterating he's the reason Philip's not in jail, though it isn't clear if Philip gives him one.

About a day later, Ray buys the rent for a house, but withholds the keys, claiming Philip owes 8% commission and tomorrow's bets. He wants a little more respect than being Philip's errand boy, so he accepts the 10% commission counteroffer. He asks Philip who the house is for, and he replies it's "a safe house for time travelers." Ray figures he's still bullshitting, but it's ultimately better he doesn't know. (S1E04: Hall)

An addict an a lawyer walk into a store...

Five weeks after their first meeting, while driving his car Ray spots a visibly high Philip wandering about. He thought the young man was getting better due to the percocet he was getting him, so he decides to spend some time with him even without financial incentive. He figures Philip needs someone to talk to, so they go to a pet store to get him a turtle. Philip buys one that he names Poppy, and Ray figures it's much better than puppies, which take a lot of effort to raise. Ray then drives him to an AA meeting, where Philip hallucinates Ray being "Traveler 7294" and praying for strength to carry out the Director's orders. When he snaps back to reality, Philip's just hearing Ray encouraging him to acknowledge his addiction, which he then does. Ray pats him on the back for this. (S1E07: Protocol 5)

Following a recommendation from Philip, Ray visits David Mailer in police interrogation and takes him as a client. His first impression with David is he's someone "special", in a negative way, and initially jokes he's looking at 10 years prison time. He eventually gets David out of questioning. (S2E01: Ave Machina)

Kidnapping and Release[]

Sometime in the fourth quarter of 2017, Ray is drugged unconscious and locked in a room with David, Jeff Conniker, Grace Day, and Kathryn MacLaren. When he comes to, he remarks "not again", indicating this isn't the first time it happened to him. He assumes his loan shark Vargese has come to collect, but then supposes it probably has something to do with the dead guy in David's residence that he got him legal assistance for.

Ray shines a light into the fact that a guidance counselor somehow has a working understanding of theoretical physics

He's hauled into the presence of Dr. Katrina Perrow, who explains he's been kidnapped for being an associate of the Core Traveler Team. He realizes Philip was telling the truth all along, and that a time traveler from the future placed into the body of a heroin addict only has him as a "friend". When shoved back into the room with the others, Grace attempts to deny time travel exists using scientific jargon she has no business knowing about, prompting Ray to ask what she does for a living.

Thinking there are only two henchmen guarding them, later Ray attempts to persuade Jeff that they can jump the goons when they come back (asking him to take the taller one), but they quickly abandon those plans when the henchmen return dragging a battered David back into the room. Ray is then given a tablet with Philip's video confession of being a Traveler, as does all the other abductees with their own associates. When left on their own again, he again enlists Jeff to take out the two henchmen when they come in, but the next time the door opens multiple henchmen enter to secure the abductees, forcing Ray to cancel the plan for good. This is because they have been secured for transport back to the main team. He commends Philip when they meet again because he was straight with him from the start, but he advises him they shouldn't pretend they're friends. (S2E12: 001)

Rekindling a friendship only to drop out of the series entirely

Ray is later dosed by the core team with the memory inhibitor as a test case before administering it to the other four. He wakes up back at Ops where he's led to believe the cover story: Ray was picked up by Varghese's men, given 24 hours to come up with the money, then Ray went to Philip for help, won some horse races, waited for Varghese's boys and "hilarity ensued." The debt was paid in full, and Ray went blackout drunk while celebrating with Philip. He's also given a little extra money, left over from the transaction with Varghese, and Ray hugs Philip in gratitude. (S3E01: Ilsa)

Trivia[]

  • Ray's loan shark's name is spelled in the episode subtitles as either Vargese in S2E12: 001 or Varghese in S3E01: Ilsa.
