The main characters of the series

The core traveler team is a team of five Travelers who have performed several notable missions in the 21st century. The team is led by Grant MacLaren (3468, Team Leader) with other members Carly Shannon (3465, Tactician), Marcy Warton (3569, Medic), Philip Pearson (3326, Historian), and Trevor Holden (0115, Engineer).

David Mailer, a non-Traveler, has been considered an honorary team member for his various unwitting assists to the team, which ultimately ended in his sacrifice. (S3E09: David)

The original five is first assembled in the year 2017 during Version One of the Traveler Program. Marcy is the first to arrive in the past, followed by Trevor, Philip, Carly and finally MacLaren arrives two days after the others. (S1E01: Travelers)

Missions[]

Stop Jonas Walker[]

The team's very first mission after arrival and checking in on the deep web is to prevent Jonas Walker from going on a shooting rampage. They succeed, and at the same time facilitate the arrival of Traveler 3468 in MacLaren's body, who was fated to die pursuing Walker to an abandoned building. (S1E01: Travelers)

Prevent an Antimatter Explosion[]

Almost immediately after 3468's arrival Victoria Boyd, under Protocol 6, gives the team an antimatter containment unit. They are to stop an antimatter detonation that historically killed 11,000 people.

The team disable the driver of the truck containing the antimatter and swap out the cargo for a conventional explosive. They succeed in saving those 11,000, except for the driver who was rendered comatose. They are supposed to hand off the containment unit to another Traveler team to complete the mission, but their contact person dies by fentanyl overdose (historical death is gunshot suicide) and no one else from his team show up.

With their antimatter containment unit only good for ±5 hours due to damage in the interim, they decide to bring it back to its source at Van Huizen Corporation. Lead scientist Dr. Delaney is initially mistrustful, but eventually allows them to put the antimatter back in while distracting her military contact Major Gleason from seeing the proceedings.

Following the mission, the Director sends a messenger to 3468 to declare its outcome acceptable in light of extenuating factors, but warns against further breaches of protocols. (S1E02: Protocol 6)

Obtain New Mission From Incoming Traveler[]

The team is supposed to greet an incoming Traveler, about to download into a host fated to die by being hit by a bus at 9:33 PM. However, a messenger intercepts them en route and informs them the transition is canceled. (S1E03: Aleksander)

Save Aleksander Andrieko (unsanctioned)[]

Following the previous mission's cancellation, Philip falsifies a messenger and claims to the team they are to find a missing boy named Aleksander Andrieko. They track him down to his fake parents' residence, but a messenger takes over Aleksander's body and relays to the team that they are off-mission. They still save the boy when his abductors opt for a shoot-out and are killed instead. (S1E03: Aleksander)

Assist Rick Hall[]

MacLaren's team is ordered to provide support to Rick Hall's Team at their base of operations. Hall's team were supposed to be on a component exchange with a Russian Traveler team, but the deal goes south and results in casualties on both sides.

Because Hall and his surviving teammate Luca Shun are wanted criminals, MacLaren turns them over to law enforcement while Trevor and Carly take over their mission, which is to deliver the component from the Russian team to yet another team. (S1E04: Hall)

Joint Mission with Traveler Family[]

MacLaren's team greets a Traveler team that downloads into an entire family. However, the team Historian misfires and fails to overwrite Charlotte, leaving them one short. The two teams are supposed to embark on a joint operation in 48 hours, but MacLaren's team (minus Mac, who drove Charlotte to her grandmother) are forcibly abducted by parties unknown.

Mac enlists Boyd's help rescuing his team and succeeds, but the manpower depletion and length of the kidnapping results in the cancellation of their joint mission with the Traveler family. (S1E05: Room 101)

Stop Helios-685[]

As the team believe they are about to change the future so profoundly with this mission, they begin the mission with an oath:

"We, the last unbroken remnants, vow to undo the errors of our ascendants, to make the Earth whole, the lost unlost, at peril of our own birth."

The mission was originally supposed to happen elsewhere, but because they returned the antimatter back to Van Huizen the venue has changed. In conjunction with engineer Bloom they begin interfacing an x-ray laser, assembled out of components manufactured and exchanged between Traveler teams, with the antimatter containment unit in Van Huizen Corporation. This laser should prevent the asteroid Helios-685 from striking Earth, which the Director pinpointed as the single defining event that started the downfall of humanity. However, Gleason becomes aware of activity at Van Huizen and deploys the military there. Since the facility will be consumed by nuclear fire during the laser's activation, Mac's team leave the site while Bloom stays behind to do the honors.

Despite Traveler reinforcements for defense Gleason and a few men break through to the antimatter containment room. Gleason's men kill Bloom, and everyone still inside is overwritten one by one until the Major himself is overwritten and completes the task. (S1E06: Helios-685)

Facilitate Arrival of Donner's Team[]

Mac, Trevor and Philip engage the services of three webcam girls in preparation for Travelers downloading into their bodies, but their fourth member outside their building, Aaron Donner, fails to disarm the bomb he's carrying and escapes, leaving the women to be obliterated. MacLaren captures Donner, who apparently misfired and is still the original host.

Donner requests legal representation and tries to leak the existence of Travelers at a tribunal. Unbeknownst to him, everyone in the room is a Traveler, and he's revealed to be faking the misfire. Traveler 4022 is tried, convicted of treason, and overwritten by Traveler 4024, with MacLaren in physical attendance and the rest of his team watching (and voting) remotely. (S1E08: Donner)

Save Congressman Bishop[]

MacLaren is tasked by Secretary Hayes' widow to accompany Congressman Ted Bishop on Flight 329 to Washington DC. The rest of the team scramble to provide ground support, as the plane is supposed to crash and kill everyone on board. All of the team are kept unaware of that fact until Carly announces the flight number and Philip hears about it.

Prior to the flight, a stasis field generator was given to MacLaren for activation. However, he chooses to have Bishop and Kathryn MacLaren do it, who followed Grant on suspicion he was womanizing. A flight attendant is turned into a messenger warning Grant he's off-mission by saving Kat instead of himself. Bishop and Kat end up on the ground almost unscathed and triaged by the rest of the team while MacLaren sustains massive internal injuries. Bishop is overwritten with a Traveler to serve another purpose for the Grand Plan. (S1E09: Bishop)

Protect 3468's Cover[]

A D Team recovers MacLaren and delivers him back to his team's Ops for immediate medical attention, dosing him with medical nanites to aid recovery. They instruct the others to deal with Kathryn, who was exposed to Traveler technology and concepts. Marcy injects Kathryn with a memory inhibitor to make her forget, Carly dresses Kat out of her clothes, and Philip and Trevor rearrange the MacLaren house to make it look like Kathryn had a night of heavy drinking.

Furthering the ruse, Philip retrieves Mac's car from the airport but manhandles some parking attendants in the way, which alerts Mac's FBI partner Walt Forbes that something is amiss. Forbes tracks Philip back to Ops, but is greeted by the sight of an apparently uninjured MacLaren scolding his wayward "confidential informant". (S1E10: Kathryn)

Greet Traveler 0014[]

A messenger instructs MacLaren to greet incoming Traveler 0014, but neglects to provide coordinates. Philip combs through potential host candidates for the day, but in the process realizes that Trevor prevented his guidance counselor Grace Day from becoming a host. His efforts are for nought as Grace is overwritten by Traveler 0027 anyway, and they check in with Mac and Philip if they found 0014 yet. On hearing no, Grace instructs them to look for already arrived T.E.L.L.s and they home in on a farm outside town.

Grace and Ellis (0014) have related missions: Ellis has a backdoor code for the Director, while Grace wants to use it to repackage Marcy's consciousness and avoid the damaged parts of her brain. The backdoor code is sought after by The Faction, a group of people that didn't exist in Mac and the others' original future who want to topple the Director and return decisionmaking to human hands. 3569 absorbs Grace and Ellis' code and is redownloaded into Marcy, but without any of her memories prior to coming to the 21st the first time. (S1E11: Marcy)

Destroy the Quantum Frame[]

Grace used Marcy's reboot to also reboot the Director in the future to protect it from corruption by the Faction. However, Faction members have started coming to the 21st, with one overwriting Charlotte and going after loyal Travelers.

Amidst the power struggle between Director and Faction in the future, several conflicting orders are given to Travelers in the 21st. Carly is ordered to kill Grant. Ellis is tasked to assemble a quantum frame as a contingency against the Faction. Trevor receives a message to destroy the quantum frame outside the range of Ellis' space-time attenuator.

The group argue about which order is correct until Ellis accidentally shoots Grace and Trevor. Persuaded to drop the attenuation field, he is immediately turned into a messenger that reiterates the destruction of the quantum frame. Grant tries to comply but fails as the rest of his FBI colleagues burst into the scene. (S1E12: Grace)

Faction-Falsified Missions[]

The Faction has temporarily seized control of the Traveler program in the future, but could only send messengers to the past. Several missions undertaken by the team in this time are only retroactively recognized to be from the Faction instead of the Director. (S2E05: Jenny)

Stand Down From Targeting Vincent Ingram[]

After the discovery of four Traveler corpses who were apparently kidnapped by the same people who abducted the main team, investigation leads to billionaire Vincent Ingram, later known to be Traveler 001. Philip hacks into Ingram's server and finds surveillance data on several Traveler teams, including their own and the dead team.

MacLaren orders the team to gear up; they will take Vincent out to prevent him from taking more Travelers. However, Vincent's forces have already set up positions outside Ops. Messengers are sent to both the team and Vincent warning them to back off each other. As the messenger possessed Vincent's son Taylor, he orders his men to stand down. (S2E03: Jacob)

It is later revealed to 001 that he became the Faction's leader in the future. (S3E04: Perrow)

Assassinate Congressman Bishop[]

Bishop is ordered to terminate himself in the hope that he becomes a martyr for environmentalist causes, and he tasks MacLaren's team to do it. A bomb is supposed to blow up at 11:27 AM to distract people from potentially seeing Carly shoot the Congressman. However, complications force a messenger ordering Trevor to manually detonate the bomb. Philip improvises by disabling it, and because Bishop is already dying of a heart attack on the podium MacLaren authorizes Carly to proceed with the shoot. Marcy misdirects the crowd by claiming the shot came opposite Carly's location. (S2E04: 11:27)

Vaccinate Key Individuals[]

Philip is instructed by messenger to memorize a flu antiviral, which is taken by the D Team for synthesis. The team is ordered to vaccinate a few individuals to prevent them from spreading a superflu. However, it turns out to do the complete opposite: it is a Faction-engineered bioweapon designed to artificially reduce the population before shutting off.

After learning the Director is offline in the future and that it was actually the Faction ordering their last few missions, the team decide to procure some uranium and place it where the Director will be built. The operation is a misdirect but a success: the Director turns on for only 3 seconds, but in that time has synthesized the cure for the Faction plague, rerouted power to continue running, and overwritten a lot of Faction members in the 21st century. (S2E05: Jenny, S2E06: U235)

Recover Important Meteorite[]

The team is tasked to recover the inbound Fraser meteor about to crash into a lake. It contains a rare element that unlocks the secret to room temperature superconductors, a critical component of the Director's infrastructure. However, Ingram's henchmen seal off the place while men in scuba gear gun down the unsuspecting team.

The operational area has no cellphone reception. The mission is designated Protocol Alpha that the Director keeps sending successive Travelers to warn the team before they're wiped out. After various failures, the attempts finally succeed with the 8th and 9th arrivals. In the final timeline, MacLaren and the others are given enough warning by Traveler 5009 and counterattack the ambushers, shortly before Traveler 5008 arrives from a much farther distance. (S2E07: 17 Minutes)

Attend Traveler 0027's Trial[]

The whole team is initially instructed to neutralize several Faction members in the US Army. A hearing has been ordered with these Travelers the next day requiring Mac, Marcy and Trevor in particular as witnesses.

The Faction members are overwritten with the Director's programmers, who then form a tribunal charging Grace with crimes against the Grand Plan. Mac, Marcy and Trevor all testify that Grace is innocent, but the tribunal judge her guilty.

This turns out to be a pretext to draw out the actual traitor, Traveler 0029. The quantum frame, repeatedly used by the Faction to send more of their kind to the present, is discovered in 0029's possession, and he is overwritten with a loyal Traveler. Trevor helps in dismantling the frame. (S2E08: Traveler 0027)

Protect the 53rd President of the USA[]

MacLaren's team, minus Marcy, is instructed to provide tactical support to Rick Hall's mission of protecting Anna Hamilton, a child who is the future 53rd President of the United States. They successfully hold out against the Faction in a safehouse MacLaren provided. Anna is used as a messenger to explicitly suspend Protocol 3 for Faction members henceforth. (S2E10: 21C)

Cooperate with 21st Century Agencies[]

Vincent Ingram has kidnapped the core team's loved ones and forced the team to record videos revealing the existence of Travelers. The videos are released to the internet and while containment efforts are made some copies still get leaked, drawing the attention of government agencies who were already investigating Traveler infiltrations for some time.

Following the loved ones' rescue and mindwipe, the team are tasked by the Director to keep local agencies in the loop, as long as they don't interfere with Traveler operations or ask too many questions about the future. (S2E12: 001, S3E01: Ilsa)

Save Christopher Rockwell[]

Political pundit Christopher Rockwell has been given FBI security due to death threats. MacLaren gives him several chances to stop spreading awareness on Travelers, but he's unconcerned. When Daniel Sosa turns up to kill Rockwell, the Director overwrites Rockwell with a Traveler before Sosa could pull the trigger. The team's secondary mission is to meet up with the Traveler for equipment handoff, which was also passed to them from another Traveler team to Carly and Marcy. Afterward, "Rockwell" publicly renounces his previous views and starts using his influence for good. (S3E02: Yates)

Deal with Aleksander Andrieko[]

The Director tasks Philip with eliminating Aleksander as he has grown up to be a serial killer following the initial violation of Protocol 3. MacLaren shoulders the burden and tracks down the boy, who has been sent to foster homes following his real mother's death. Aleksander became friendless and a social outcast with "odd" habits, but MacLaren deciding to spend a few moments with him and treating him decently prompts the Director to call off the mission; Aleksander's future has changed for the better.

The experience proves traumatizing to MacLaren that he requests to be dosed with a memory inhibitor. It doesn't take and he ends up retracing his steps, with the rest of the team not far behind. (S3E03: Protocol 3)

Investigate 001's Whereabouts[]

While Ingram has been overwritten with a loyal Traveler, the Director found evidence that might indicate 001 is still active based on his EEG. Mac's team theorize 001 used consciousness transfer technology to jump to Katrina Perrow. With the possibility 001 could jump again, they need the AI supercomputer Ilsa connected to the internet for confirmation.

When Mac's FBI liaison Joanne Yates refuses to have Ilsa networked, Mac distracts her while Grace sneaks to a terminal to obtain the intel. They retrieve information confirming 001 is in Perrow, along with her current location. However, they only discover Perrow's discarded corpse at the place, with 001 having jumped to someone else. (S3E04: Perrow)

Resolve Corrupted Messenger[]

A messenger sent to prevent a nuclear meltdown refuses to be terminated, leaving its host Naomi occasionally babbling and writing hexadecimal code. MacLaren's team answer the call to resolve the issue with Grace's assistance, but her tricks are ineffective as the messenger is evolving into a full AI.

Now with Pike also sent to assist, the AI transfers into nanites given to Naomi. A defibrillator deactivates the nanites, restoring normal brain activity in Naomi, but the AI unpacks itself in Trevor after she bit him.

The Director in Ilsa offers the AI in Trevor a space alongside it if it transfers out of the Traveler. The AI accepts and Trevor is overwritten with his own consciousness intact, minus the AI. The Director also instructs Trevor to give Grace a hug. The mission is resolved, although Trevor has developed Temporal Displacement Aphasia as a result of too many consciousness transfers. (S3E05: Naomi)

Save Kidnapped Historians[]

The Faction under Dawn kidnaps several Historians for their cause. The team embark on a mission to find these Historians after Hall is found bleeding to death, recalling the Protocol 3 suspension for Faction. Using a black box they extract a location from Hall's mind and successfully mount a rescue, although Hall passes from his injuries. (S3E06: Philip)

Destroy Anthrax-Loaded Plane[]

Trevor is supposed to shoot down a plane that was about to disperse anthrax over the local city. However, his temporal aphasia has triggered, resulting in him missing the target. A backup Traveler team nearby completes the mission. (S3E07: Trevor)

Prevent the Singularity Engine's Creation[]

Andrew Mathias Graham is overwritten by Traveler 7189, a specialist in black hole physics, to convince scientists Samantha Burns and Amanda Myers not to publish their work on the singularity engine as it will result in a world-ending catastrophe in 20 years. However, 7189's host has been discovered to be a serial killer and arrested. MacLaren's team temporarily breaks him out of custody, against Yates' explicit orders, so he can explain to the scientists why their breakthrough is actually a bad idea. Burns is dejected but understands, and she promises to fill Myers up on the math later. (S3E08: Archive)

Protocol Omega[]

After the Faction's assault on archives worldwide, the Director uses a dying David to declare Protocol Omega to the team. (S3E09: David) They technically have no more missions, but they still want to take on the threat of the Faction and 001.

Carly abandons the team after the first emergency missile strike warnings, Marcy kills herself to prevent 001 from hijacking the Director. The survivors and Grace figure out a way to prevent 001 from ever being sent back, and use 001's consciousness transfer machine to send 3468 back to MacLaren's younger self in August 2001. They surmise the Director stayed silent because it knew they will come up with a solution. 3468 successfully transfers and makes the necessary but far-reaching changes.

The Director declares Version One of the Traveler program a failure. It loads Version Two next. (S3E10: Protocol Omega)
